The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012.  Lenten regulations for the Diocese of Bismarck are:

1.       Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Fridays in Lent and Good Friday.

2.       In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and until they celebrate their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  Those who are bound to this regulation may eat only one full meal.  Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

These minimal penitential practices should not be lightly excused

Are you making plans for the future?

There are many ways to plan for the future through your

will or trust. A good plan will help you care for your loved

ones after you are gone, plan for your own care or even

make a gift to the church.

If you would like to include the church in your

planning, please call the parish office or the Diocesan Office of Planned

Giving at 701-222-3035 to discuss any of these charitable estate

Remember your diocese, parish and/or your Catholic school in your will!

Why do Catholics light candles at church?  Perhaps you are also referring to those stands which have small banks of candles which people can light (usually within small glass containers, colored or not, and often called "vigil lights"). Often you can find them near a statue or icon of Mary. These are called votive candles and indicate that someone is praying about something particular, either for themselves or on behalf of someone else. The word "votive" can also refer to a promise to pray for someone, as well as a wish or desire for a certain outcome on behalf of someone, such as recovery of health.  A donation box intended to defer candle costs generally accompanies votive candles

I write in order to remind you of the nine-month Seminar Series entitled “Bioethical Challenges of Our Time” and to encourage you to attend. The Bismarck Catholic Physicians’ Guild and the University of Mary have been planning this for more than a year. It could described as a once in a lifetime opportunity. The presenters are from the National Catholic Bioethics Center and are some of the leading experts in the field. It is one Friday evening and Saturday morning per month for nine months. The first weekend is January 20th and 21st. Please see the attached posters and brochures which provide needed information, including the registration information. Posters will soon be sent out to every parish. Please display them.

I consider this seminar series to be so important to the Diocese of Bismarck that I have chosen to financially sponsor the series and have purchased ten seats to be reserved for priests. The seats will be offered on a first to register basis. You can register for particular weekends or for the entire seminar. It is my hope that as many priests as possible will take advantage of this. As you know, each priest receives $500 per year to be used toward continuing formation. You could use those funds for the series.

Lastly, I ask you to encourage those in your parish who would benefit most from this seminar series to attend – doctors, pharmacists, health care administrators, nurses, NFP instructors, high school religion and science teachers, marriage preparation couples, RCIA and Adult Education Directors, DREs, permanent deacons, etc.

Thank you for your priestly zeal and with a promise of my prayers, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend David D. Kagan, D.D., P.A., J.C.L.

Bishop of Bismarck
